Security in Beijing is tight around Tiananmen Square on Tuesday as China marks 35 years since the bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protests that killed hundreds, if not thousands.

The naïve U.S. desire to try and shape China's emergence on the global scene may have ultimately proven its undoing as Beijing failed to liberalize its society as various administrations had hoped.

Hong Kong commemorated the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989 on Tuesday. Several media personnel have complained that they faced obstruction and harassment from authorities during that time and otherwise.
